Wait, if the prisoners have something to do then won't that actually decrease the chances of violence? I mean games are just another way of venting anger and what not. Those guys who placed the ban were probably thinking, if they fight online then this could create conflict in real life and since d&d is a multiplayer game that means that several inmates can fight other inmates, and if that happens then they could grow to resent each other and then they'll all kill each other! its pretty ridiculous really. I think that If I was in that guys shoes, the fact that they took my game away, and I have life in prison anyway, would just give me even more of reason to want to escape, and create even more anger within me. gang warfare online, translating to real life... imagine what that would look like with WoW nerds XD.
"Prisons can restrict the rights of inmates to nerd out, a federal appeals court has found.
A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit rejected the claims in a lawsuit challenging a ban on the game Dungeons & Dragons by the Waupun Correctional Institution in Wisconsin."
What they're saying is that the prisons can ban it at their own discretion. This doesn't ban the game in every prison nationwide, just in prisons where the administration of that prison sees that it could be / is a problem. I totally agree; what might help calm and regulate one group of prisoners' behavior could cause other groups of prisoners to act / behave dangerously. It should totally be up to the people who run each prison what extracurricular activities are aloud.
I've been playing DnD for about ten years now and I feel that the inmates should at lest be able to play the game. I mean they guy wrote a 90 plus page book so he and others could play. I don't think that they have any evidence to support their argument of "it could lead to gang behaviour and fantasies about escape."
That's crap. I think that they should take a more psychological approach to this whole thing. See how it effects the inmates psychologically. I mean, the guy is in jail for LIFE! At lest let him have something that allows him to hold onto his sanity.
